General description
Bordering the south west coast of Cuba is the Canarreos Archipelago, an area which attracts visitors with its rich level of conservation and with wide a range of resources. The Archipelago is formed by approximately 300 tiny islands and Cayo Largo del Sur is a long islet which is considered a true paradise and which captivates its visitors as soon as they set eyes on the more than 27km of un-spoilt beaches.
National Geographic Magazine has cited the marine life and reefs of this region within the best in the world, which one can witness with a simple diving session off any of the nearby diving points. Another natural element which visitors can enjoy is taking a bird watching tour in the local mangroves.
The presence of the Free International Port allows for nautical activities and services including: fishing, yacht charters, excursions around the islet and the nearby keys of Rosario, Rico, Cantiles & Iguana and the Isle of Youth. There are over 27km of fine white sands on Cayo Largo which allows for easy access to its beaches. Some of the beaches on the islet are very private and quiet and have been declared protected areas as turtles have chosen these location to lay their eggs. The reason for their choice is that the sands of Playa Sirena have the peculiarity of not getting hot despite the strong sun rays, as well as housing coral reefs 35m deep.
There are 33 diving points where the coral reefs are located, with their native fauna. Here you will find tunnels and walls with gorgonias and a rich marine life with many species including sharks, sting rays and turtles. You will also see rock faces with unique marine sponges endemic to this area.
