IMPORTANT: All visitors to Cuba have to prove they have MEDICAL INSURANCE on arrival
New Cuban State Law applicable as from 1st May 2010
Despite some uncertainties the main issues are:
- All foreign visitors entering Cuba, will have to show proof that they have medical insurance – not just travel insurance but medical cover
- Any tourists not able to prove this, will have to purchase the insurance sold by at the airport before being allowed to proceed through immigration
- Medical insurances which are not valid are those issued by any insurance companies from the USA (as the USA does not allow its companies to cover US nationals in Cuba)
The following remains un-clear: What documents will immigration consider as prove of medical insurance?
- Some travelers have an insurance policy document which they must present, and which should be accepted as proof have a policy
- For those who have medical insurance include with their credit card, for which they do not have a separate document – how do you prove have cover? – the response so far – you must present something – for example the paperwork the bank / credit card company sends you with the contact details of who you should get in touch with in case of a medical emergency
Further information:
- Does the foreign Insurance company have to have contract with Assistur in order for tourists to be allowed into Cuba?
R/ No, so long as they prove they have cover, they will be allowed into the country, however, if the insurance company does not have contract, they may have more difficulty if they do need to use medical cover when in Cuba
- US citizens will have to have their medical insurance included in their package holiday to Cuba, or purchase on arrival
We were informed that immigration are putting into place a checking system which will interfere as little as possible with the immigration process and cause as few delays as possible.
The overall impression is that this is being put into place in order to prevent Cuban/Americans to use the Cuban free medical system, and that passengers on these flights will be the ones subject to the most checks – let’s hope this is the case and that the majority of our clients will not be affected.
